May 2, 2014: The Week in Review

May 2nd, 2014 No comments

May has arrived and in a few short days, millions of assholes will think themselves quite clever by posting “May the Fourth be with you” to Facebook and Twitter. But in the meantime, here are a few choice items that forced themselves into my consciousness this week: Rant On!

March 28, 2014: The Week in Review

I had a dream this week that I was Nightcrawler from the X-Men (or something along those lines), as I could teleport quite well (though thankfully I hadn’t grown a tail in the bargain). I wasn’t called upon to save the world, but I did find it quite a pleasant surprise when I realized that I didn’t need to carry my keys with me or wait for the elevator. That was the highlight of my week, but here are a few things that went on in the so-called “real” world: Rant On!

March 7, 2014: The Week in Review

Aside from Russia continuing to kick sand in the faces of the rest of the world, it was a relatively uneventful week. While my wife attended an Oscar party Sunday evening, I stayed at home and re-watched Predator, which as far as I know, never received any Academy Awards, thus exposing the Academy Awards for the complete and utter farce that they are. Nonetheless, here are a few moments from the week past that I’ve cherry-picked for posterity: Rant On!

2013: The Year in Review

December 31st, 2013 No comments

I was fairly intent on the world ending in 2012, as promised by the ultimately unreliable Mayans, but as that didn’t come to pass, I was a bit ill-prepared for 2013. Nonetheless, the year came and went and I dealt with it as best I could. Rather than a lengthy critical analysis of the year past, I’ve captured the highlights of the year which I believe speak for themselves: Rant On!

On the Trappings of Celebrity and Why Football and I Agreed to See Other People

September 22nd, 2011 No comments

I like football.  I don’t follow football, because, to be honest, it’s entirely too much goddamned work to keep up with any manner of professional sport.  It’s essentially impossible for me to keep up with the cavalcade of names, their affiliations and various relevant statistics and trivia required of a true sports fan.  For one, I’m not good with names to begin with.  In any given social situation, I’m fortunate to remember the names of more than one out of every five new people that I meet (I have managed over the years to distill the circumstances necessary for my actually remembering someone’s name down to a handful of basic criteria, but that’s a discourse unto itself), much less an entire goddamned team roster.  But more importantly (returning to my original assessment), I like football.  I don’t love football or espouse any particular passion for it, and thus, like so many other things in life, it all comes down to the simple fact that I don’t give enough of a shit about it to invest the time and energy required to be a real “fan”. Rant On!
